2023 Plein Air Judge & Workshops

Patrick Saunders – Artist

We are so fortunate to have this distinguished plein air artist join our festival as

Judge and Workshop Instructor in 2023!

Patrick Saunders is an award-winning artist who travels the globe, creating fine art, teaching painting workshops, and judging painting competitions. Patrick paints a variety of subjects, including portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, and florals.

“I believe that art is the act of creation. The result, whether it is a painting, sculpture, photograph etc., is simply a record of the creation experience. My approach is to free myself from preconceived visual beliefs and interpret the world directly before me. In so doing, I rediscover the colors, textures and values of everyday life that we otherwise take for granted. This is what drives me to paint and what I encourage in my students.

My art is the product of diligence in practice. I do not believe in talent. I believe that all of us have the potential to create art, if we choose to dedicate ourselves to the pursuit.”

Explore the essential techniques for painting from direct observation (en plein air) with award winning artist, Patrick Saunders. Learn to paint any subject, from the most simple to complex with one approach. During this workshop, we will use the landscape as our subject, but the same approach can be applied to a still life, portraiture, etc. Patrick will demonstrate the process of simplifying the subject and moving to finish as rapidly as possible in order to add more energy and excitement to your painting. Students will learn about composition, value, texture, color temperature and accuracy in paint application.

Oil and Acrylic painters of all skill levels are welcome to this workshop. Sorry, we will not be focusing on watercolor.

Each day will begin with a short lecture and full demonstration, followed by one-on-one instruction. The day will end with a group critique and individual goal setting.

This class is highly tailored for each individual student, and all levels are welcome. Class size is limited, so that each student can receive the maximum amount of interaction with the instructor. A suggested materials list will be provided prior to the class.

Cancellation Policy: Included in each workshop is a non-refundable $100 registration fee. Cancellations 30 days prior to the class receive a full refund minus the $100 registration fee. Cancellations within 30 days of the class only receive a full refund minus $100 processing fee if a replacement can be found to fill the open spot.
