GOT Art Gallery on Third Closes

The Community Says Goodbye to Downtown’s Only Fine Art Gallery

It is with deep regret that the board of directors of Summit Art Inc., the 501c3 nonprofit organization responsible for operating GOT Art Gallery on Third, announces the closure of their fine art gallery and art education space in downtown Lee’s Summit effective immediately.

After spending many weeks renovating and transforming the space into a fine art gallery, and much effort re-envisioning the gallery business plan, it was determined that the financial stresses on the organization could not be overcome in the immediate future. All artwork currently on exhibit and for sale at the gallery will be returned to the artists. All scheduled art education classes are cancelled. “All of us at Summit Art are so deeply saddened about these circumstances. Operating this extraordinary gallery in this beautiful historic space in downtown Lee’s Summit has been a priority for our organization for many years”, says Teddy Jackson, Summit Art board chair. “We remain profoundly grateful to the Netterville family for partnering with us over the years with this endeavor.”

Summit Art will continue to host its’ annual signature event, the Summit Art Festival, October 11-13, 2019, in downtown Lee’s Summit. Festival director Jody Fristoe is excited about bringing this unique, family-friendly fine art event to the community again this year. Over 100 booths will showcase artists from all across the country, and the Student Art Pavilion expects to exhibit over 250 original works of art created by local middle and high school students. “The festival is the perfect place to nourish your mind, body and creative spirit by celebrating the power of expression. Plus, local musicians and casual street fare.”

Summit Art will continue its mission to support art and artists in our community with exhibition opportunities, professional development and mentoring. The Summit Art Gallery at Saint Luke’s East Hospital, the largest fine art gallery in eastern Jackson County, will continue to be managed by Summit Art. Proceeds from the sale of artwork at the hospital provide scholarships to area high school students pursuing a visual arts degree. Engaging the public through the support and creation of visual art remains the primary purpose of Summit Art.
