Don James

Don James is a black/white fine art photographer with a background in the music industry as a recording engineer, songwriter, and composer, all disciplines which have informed his journey in photography.

He first learned photography and darkroom skills in Boy Scouts using his grandfather’s Argus C3. In 2015, Don truly began finding his voice behind the lens revealing his own unique perspective on the world around him.

Don’s Artist Statement:

When I make a photograph, I am looking for the exceptional moment hidden in ordinary events. I view my surroundings from a slightly different perspective through the lens; cutting through the familiar layers to find a story that might be overlooked by the casual observer.

I have always been drawn to black and white images. Although we live in a world filled with color, I tend to look through my lens with a grayscale palette. I find that the absence of color strips away distractions and brings clarity to an image. While my photographs are meant to highlight the unexpected, I also strive to find
elements that draw in the observer on a personal level. When someone looks at one of my images and can see a part of themselves, that is when it is no longer just a photograph but becomes art.
