Brooks Gentleman
My artistic journey is rooted in a lifelong engagement with creative expression, shaped early through formative weekends spent alongside my grandfather, the architect and artist John Woolson Brooks. These experiences instilled in me a deep, intuitive understanding of craft and form that would lay dormant for decades while I pursued a career in business and historic building preservation. After more than thirty-five years restoring landmark architectural structures across the United States, I answered a persistent creative calling upon selling my business in 2021, embracing fully the visual language that had always been my first love. My work reflects a reconciliation of analytical rigor and artistic spontaneity, honoring the legacy of mentorship while forging a distinct contemporary voice.
Extra ARTIST BIO Text BoMy practice spans painting and chalk art, each medium chosen for its capacity to transform space and engage the viewer in unexpected ways. I use both oils and acrylics for my paintings and am constantly scouting subjects that inspire beauty and personally resonate with my journey. My chalk compositions, in particular, embrace the ephemeral—drawing inspiration from impermanent traditions to remind us of beauty’s transient nature and the joy of shared experience. Through public-facing works that invite participation and reflection, I like to explore the intersection of memory, place, and human connection, striving to make art that is both accessible and profound.x if needed.
