About this Workshop
Painting portraits can be highly rewarding, but it can also be intimidating! Perhaps your past portrait attempts have looked flat and formless, or the skin colors have been “chalky” or “muddy.” Maybe you spent hours painting the perfect eye, only to realize later it was in the wrong place. If these struggles sound familiar, you are not alone. I’m excited to show you how to conquer these challenges and many more in this information-packed workshop!
In this workshop you will learn to...
Draw anything correctly with the 4 Actions for Accurate Proportions
Mix realistic skin colors with my simple mixing methods
Make your portraits come alive with 3-D form
Avoid “chalky” or “muddy” skin colors
Understand warm and cool colors
And much more!
Adam will begin each morning by sharing vital principles for portrait painting. Then, you’ll see those concepts in action as he demonstrates painting a portrait from a live model.

Supply List
Adam will be usingusing Rosemary & Co. brushes; Rembrandt, Gamblin, and Holbein oil paints; and linen panels from RayMar. However, please feel free to use any quality brands and surface types.
PAINT COLORS
(Feel free to replace cadmiums with permanent colors)
Please bring:
Cadmium red light or medium
Permanent alizarin crimson
Cadmium orange
Cadmium lemon
Cadmium yellow medium
Yellow ochre
Transparent oxide red (or burnt sienna)
Ultramarine blue
Viridian
Titanium (or titanium-zinc) white
Ivory black.
BRUSHES
• At least 3 bristle flats or filberts ranging from small to large (sizes 1–12 or so)
• At least 3 softer flats or filberts (such as sable, mongoose or synthetic) ranging from small to large (sizes 1–12 or so)
• 1 or 2 small bristle rounds or riggers for details (sizes 0–2)
SURFACES
Please bring 1 surface for each day. Sizes can range from 8in x 10in to 12in x 16in.
SOLVENTS
• I would like everyone to use Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits, but please also bring a natural thinner such as artist’s linseed oil or artist’s safflower oil in case someone has a sensitivity to Gamsol.
• Airtight brush washer container (like this one)
EASEL
Please bring a portable easel that stands on the ground, such as a french easel, pochade box, etc. If your easel cannot hold your palette, please bring a small folding table
for your palette.
OTHER
• Portable palette (please no paper palettes or palettes with walls and compartments)
• At least 1 medium-sized palette knife
• Viva or blue carpenter paper towels
• Trash bags for soiled towels
• Note-taking materials
